When preparing our new store in Silver Spring, MD in the fall of 2011 one of our top priorities was building a team of enthusiastic and passionate individuals to represent City Sports in the community. Few fit the mold as well as Tina Stilson. In between managing the equipment department at the store and testing out the latest product, Tina spends her time running, cycling and enjoying the great parks and restaurants Silver Spring has to offer. We caught up with Tina to learn a little bit more about her life and what inspires her to stay active.
Where are you from originally?
I was born and raised in Trondheim, a town, founded 1,015 years ago and located in the middle of Norway. Trondheim is known primarily for producing more world class winter sports athletes than any other region in the world 🙂
How long have you been with City Sports and what is your current role?
I have been with City Sports since November 2011. I am the equipment manager at our Silver Spring location.
What is your favorite sport?
It’s hard to choose one favorite sport, as I love sports, both playing and watching. My favorites to participate in are soccer and running. My absolute favorite sport to watch is track and field, followed by soccer, cross country skiing, biathlon and cycling. I am also falling in like with baseball.
What inspires you to stay active?
To me being active is a lifestyle. I love to compete, whether it is a race, a recreational league soccer game or setting a personal best in the number of push-ups I can do. Knowing that I will have more energy and feel better – being active is great for both physical and mental health – is another important aspect that keeps me going. As extra motivation working out means I can eat more chocolate.
What was your first pair of athletic shoes?
My first pair of athletic shoes were a pair of running shoes from some cheap, unknown brand, frequently utilized at age three when I went to track practice with my mom. The first athletic shoes to make me realize the difference between good shoes and bad shoes were an early version of the Asics DS Trainers.
What is the one product you could never train without?
I feel lost without a sports watch. Right now the Polar RS300x is my favorite training partner.
If you could run a mile with anyone in the world, past or present, who would it be?
There are so many interesting people in history I would love to sit down and talk to. However, for running a mile a shirtless Matthew McConaughey would suffice.
Do you train with music, and if so, what’s your favorite track?
I need my music when I’m training. My current go to song when I need some extra motivation is Depeche Mode’s Personal Jesus.
What is your favorite cheat-food?
If it wouldn’t mean risking severe malnutrition issues my diet would consist mainly of bacon and chocolate.
What do you like most about the Silver Spring area? Any restaurants or parks that you recommend?
My favorite part about Silver Spring is that you can walk anywhere. It’s a great place to indulge in Ethiopian food, and my two favorite spots are Bete and Addis Ababa. I am also in love with Rock Creek Park. There are some really nice running trails in the park, and on weekends parts of Beach Drive is closed off, which makes it perfect for a bike ride.
